In 2001, 120 nationally renowned artists were invited to Santa Fe, New Mexico as to participate in a new public art project called The Trail of Painted Ponies. Their job was to transform life-size fiberglass horse sculptures into original works of art. Hundreds of thousands of people enjoyed the dazzling results as the horses traveled the state. The national media got in on the fun with rave reviews coming from all corners, including a PBS documentary film. When the sales of all the "ponies" were tallied, close to one million dollars was generated for arts, cultural, youth, animal, social and environmental organizations.
Since the time the Trail of Painted Ponies has expanded to new ranges. They have mounted a series of national art competitions as a way of broadening artistic involvement.
