Rodeo
101
Rough Stock
Rodeo competition consists of seven main events -- bareback
riding, saddle bronc, bull riding, barrel racing, tie-down roping,
team roping and steer wrestling. Judged or roughstock events
are bareback, saddle bronc and bull riding, while timed events
are barrel racing, tie-down roping, team roping and steer wrestling.
For the young, upcoming cowboys and cowgirls, mutton bustin'
is an opportunity to challenge their riding ability on a running,
bucking sheep.
Roughstock events score one to 25 points to the cowboy and for
the animal by each of two judges. The maximum of one hundred
points denotes a perfect ride. While cowboys are judged on spur
motions, timing and control, the horses are judged on their
ability to buck. A mark-out rule is in effect for both bareback
and saddle bronc, but not for bull riding. Determined by the
judges, the rider is penalized with a no score if his spurs
don't hit the horse's shoulder on the first leap from the chute.
